Arsenal manager, Arsene Wenger, has insisted the Gunners ‘were never close’ to signing Germany midfielder Sami Khedira this summer.
Wenger’s side have been continuously linked with a move for Khedira as the Frenchman reportedly continues his search for a new central midfielder.
However, Wenger insists there was never any real interest in Khedira from his side.
“I don’t know who has put him on the market. Whether it is his agent, or somebody else I don’t know,” Wenger told the media on Thursday.
“We were never close to signing him.
“Jack Wilshere has come back fit and in midfield we have offensive midfielders, we have box-to-box players, we have quite a few.”
Real Madrid are reportedly keen to offload the 27-year-old as he enters the final year of his contract, with Chelsea understood to be closing in on his services.
Arsenal are reportedly targeting Portugal starlet, William Carvalho, but Wenger’s comments cast doubts whether the Gunners will sign another central midfielder.
