Real Madrid could be girding themselves for a bid for Gareth Bale, after the club’s president, Florentino Perez, again hinted his attention has been caught by the Spurs star.
All is quiet on the transfer front at the Bernabeu at the moment, but that will change if Perez is re-elected Real president as expected on Tuesday.
Spurs will be keeping an eye on the election results in Madrid, and will be bracing themselves for a big-money bid for Bale after Perez’s latest comments.
"Bale is one of Europe’s great players and Real Madrid always likes great players," Perez told Punto Pelota.
"We have to improve our squad but we have to do it with tranquillity - and we’ll do that in the next weeks."
Meanwhile, in what is probably the single canniest thing he could say in public ahead of Real’s presidential elections, Perez has insisted that superstar Cristiano Ronaldo will not be leaving the club anytime soon.
Speculation over his Bernabeu future has swirled around CR7 for the past 12 months, and increased when his compatriot, Jose Mourinho, exited with a cloud above his head.
But Perez says that Ronaldo will not be leaving Madrid for a long time yet.
"I believe Ronaldo will finish his career at Real Madrid," Perez said.
