Annoyed Abidal Keeps His Options Open

Eric Abidal says he is still “annoyed” that Barcelona let him go at the end of last season.

The Frenchman says that despite the fact that he needed a liver transplant, he is in a fit condition to play. And he had hoped to remain at the Camp Nou.

"I don't understand. I fought for them. I'm in great shape. They didn't give me a reason - they told me it was a professional decision,” Abidal told Radio RMC regarding his somewhat bitter departure from Barca.

"I have to accept it. Of course it brings into question my ability to continue playing. I'm the first to judge my condition. I don't want to put my life in danger. That's why I'm a bit annoyed with the club's decision."

Now that he has left the club he served so well for six seasons, Abidal says he is on the hunt for a new team to play for.

The 33-year-old left-back says that while he would prefer to stay in Spain so that he does not have uproot his family, a return to France may well be on the cards.

He has been linked to Monaco, where he started his professional career, but Abidal says he will not rule out any other options.

"I want to keep playing, but I don't know where. A lot of clubs are taking an interest in me,” he explained.

"I'm getting quite a few messages. I have to make the right decision and must take my time. I won't rule out any club. The door is open.

"I could finish at Monaco or take on the bigger challenge of a team that's in the Champions League.

"Monaco could have a great team for next season and aim for the highest places in the table. For me, it could be a good challenge to come full circle as I started there.

“But I don't have any priority, whether it be Monaco or anyone else."

Abidal has also set his sights on returning to the France set-up for the first time since 2012, and winning more caps all the way until an international swansong at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

"I have to play at a club first. I hope to find a club and enjoy myself. Then, I'll be available for selection," he said.

"The World Cup in Brazil would be the icing on the cake. To finish in Brazil would be huge."
