Eric Abidal has revealed that Dani Alves wanted to give him his liver when he fell ill with cancer, but the Brazilian could not do it for fear of damaging his own career.
The two defenders were close friends when they played together at Barcelona, and Alves has gone on record to say he was unhappy with the way Abidal’s stay at the Camp Nou came to an end.
He now wears the Frenchman’s former shirt number at Barca.
Abidal has told Radio Catalunya that Alves “wanted to give me his liver, but it couldn’t be.”
"The story with Dani goes beyond the jersey," the 34-year-old left-back explained.
"He knows it. Me too. We are friends and we talk about everything. He wanted to support me.
“And besides, he's a very good person. He was my neighbour and his ex-wife and my wife are friends."
Meanwhile, Abidal has denied reports that he has fallen out with Barca over his exit from the club.
He says that some of the comments he made had been misinterpreted, and that he will forever hold Barca in his heart.
"I have no problem with Barcelona. Everything was agreed to, and what Barca said was true and what I said was also true. There isn't any problem,” he said.
“Not with (president) Sandro Rosell, not with (sports director Andoni) Zubizarreta, not with (former coach Tito) Vilanova, not with the fans.
“Everything is fine. I will return to Barcelona with the same joy I have always had."
