Alves To Costa: Choose Brazil

Barcelona star Dani Alves has urged Diego Costa to follow his example and remain true to Brazil.

Atletico Madrid striker Costa is reportedly close to switching allegiance from the country of his birth, Brazil, to world and European champions Spain.

He has twice played in friendlies for the Selecao but after being overlooked for the Confederations Cup, the idea of playing at the next World Cup for La Furia Roja must appeal to Costa, who is currently the top-scorer in La Liga.

The Spanish football authorities are said to have contacted Fifa regarding registering Costa as a Spain player but Alves hopes the striker will reconsider.

He was in the same position earlier in his career but opted to remain affiliated to Brazilian football and is now his country’s first-choice right-back.

"I ask Diego Costa to take the decision with a cool head, because he would also be an important player for Brazil," Alves said.

"He is not pichichi of La Liga for nothing. These decisions are very personal and whatever Diego Costa decides must be respected but I would suggest he thinks coolly because he cannot later turn back."

"I have not spoken with Diego Costa about this decision because I do not want to interfere," Alves added.

"Diego will know what is the best for him. If, in the end, he decides to play for Spain, we must respect that.

“The same happened to me in 2006, when I was at Sevilla, and I decided to play for the team of my own country."
