Ajax Win And Stay In Race

Ajax Amsterdam beat Celtic 1-0 in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday night, to move 1 point behind AC Milan in their group, and kept their qualifying hopes alive.

Thulani Serero started for Ajax tonight and played 72 minutes before being substituted.

Serero was involved in a lot of the action as Ajax saw most of the ball, and did most of the attacking. He was a constant threat throughout and part of many of the attacking build-ups, but some of his final passes were disappointing.

He did however assist in Ajax's goal, when he cheekily back-heeled the ball to goalscorer Lasse Schone.

Stefano Denswil had the first real attempt at goal in the ninth minute but his shot was saved by Fraser Forster in the Celtic goal.

In the 18th minute Ricardo van Rhijn sent in a cross but Forster was able to save Siem de Jong's headed attempt.

Denswil had another chance in the 20th minute, but his shot from outside of the box was well dealt with by Forster.

Danish International Lasse Schone had two chances blocked, in the 27th and 30th minutes, as Ajax continued to press.

In the 44th minute Serero sent in a wonderful weighted pass but De Jong could only play the ball straight at Forster.

A minute later Serero tried a shot from outside the area but it was too high, and at half-time it remained Ajax 0-0 Celtic.

Schone put Ajax in the lead in the 51st minute, as he played a one-two with Serero, who back-heeled the ball back into the path of Schone, who put the ball in the back of the net.

Anthony Stokes had a chance for Celtic in the 55th minute but his shot from the left of goal was saved by Jasper Cillessen.

Three minutes later Serero almost got on to the end of a good ball into the box, but Forster rushed out and saved at his feet.

Kris Commons tried from a free kick in the 66th minute, but his shot lacked power and rolled safely into the hands of Cillessen.

Serero was taken off in the 72nd minute, and replaced by Danish teenager Viktor Fischer

In the 79th minute Fischer played in Schone down the left,  and he tried to shoot from just outside the area, but the ball went straight at Forster, who saved.

Schone had another chance in the 86th minute as he broke into the box, but Forster saved his shot with his feet to deflect it out for a corner.

From the resulting corner Ajax saw an attempt from Denswil hit the woodwork and bounce clear.
