Samuel Chukwueze, was recently ranked as the most valuable U20 African player by Switzerland-based organisation CIES Football Observatory, with an estimated value of €35 million (R568 million).
According to BBC Football, the 19-year-old Nigerian international has been offered the opportunity to feature at the 2019 AFCON tournament as well as the U20 World Cup.
As a result Villareal have, however, offered Chukwueze an ultimatum after informing the teenage sensation that he can not feature at both tournaments.
Super Eagles boss Gernot Rohr showered praise on Chukwueze while stating that he hopes that the situation gets resolved.
"It is a little dilemma that we must try to fix and hopefully there will be a good solution," Rohr told BBC Sport.
"I understand when the club say it is impossible for him to play in the Afcon and youth World Cup.
"Chukwueze has good qualities and we already see why he plays at the top level in Spain.
"He has an interesting ability which makes him a very important talent for any team he plays with.
"I saw this quality when he played with us and the Olympic team, we must support Chukwueze and our other players too."
Despite only being promoted to the Villareal first-team in 2018, the winger has already found the back of the net in the Europa League, LaLiga and Spanish cup competitions, while also having made his international debut against Uganda in November.
The Under-20 World Cup comes to a close in Poland on 15 June, with the AFCON tournament set to start six days later.
