Botswana Scrape By Burundi
Hosts Botswana Zebra’s fought tooth and nails to qualify for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier second round after a hard fought 1-0 win over visitors Burundi Swallows in an match played on Sunday Aftenoon.
Botswana had managed to hold Burundi 0-0 in the first-leg game played a fortnight ago in Bunjumbura and it was a must-win match for both teams .
Captain Joel Mogorosi was the man of the moment as he did what was expected of him pouncing onto a long ball from Kabelo Dambe before side stepping two Swallows defenders as he fired in the all important goal that was the difference in the game in the 56th minute as the stadium erupted in ruptures.
The first-half was a see saw affair as both sides tried to infiltrate the tightly manned defence but Burundi showed more purpose as they piled pressure on the hosts but Botswana's goal keeper was up to the task thwarting attempts by danger man Selemani Ndikumana who remained a thorn in the flesh of the Botswana defence.
Botswana's coach Peter Butler was an elated man after the match praising his players for their resilience saying: "It was a tough match against our very determined opponents but atleast we held on to the important goal until the last whistle and now we have to embark on proper preparations."
His counterpart Winfred Rainer was not happy with the officiating: "We played really well but i feel the referee was not fair to us but thats is football we will go back to the drawing board."
Botswana will now meet Guinea-Bissau in the next round.
