Impressive Lesotho stunned Liberia with a 2-0 win to book a place in the second round of the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
Likuena, as the Lesotho National team is affectionately known, scored two early goals in the first half to win the second leg first round tie 2-1 on aggregate in a match played at Setsoto Stadium in Maseru.
Liberia had won the first leg match 1-0 played in Monrovia a fortnight ago, with Mamelodi Sundowns’ Anthony Laffor having scored the only goal of the match.
Lesotho’s first goal came as early as the second minute with midfielder Mabuti Potloane punishing the erratic Lone Stars for the opening goal of the match.
Lesotho increased the score in the fifth minute with Liberia’s Oliseh Sekou scoring an unfortunate own goal from a well taken corner kick by Tšoanelo Koetle.
Laffor, who scored the winner in the first leg match, had a very quiet game and was out-shown by Free-State Stars bound Lesotho striker, Thapelo Tale, who gave a man of the match performance.
The win will see the tiny Mountain Kingdom country advancing to the second round of the competition where they will meet Kenya, who eliminated Comoros.
The impressive Lesotho were the better side from the word go and created a lot of goal-scoring chances, but were let down by poor finishing.
Laffor could have brought his team back into the game in the dying minutes of the match, but ballooned a good chance over the bar .
Liberia were able to regroup in the second half, but could not penetrate the Lesotho defence marshalled by their captain, Moitheri Ntobo.
Lesotho held on to win the match and advance to the next stage of the competition.
