30 Goal Target For Striker Rooney

Wayne Rooney appears to have got his way at Manchester United, and is set for a run in the team as a striker in tandem with Robin van Persie.

The burly England striker began to agitate for a move last season, after he was played out of position as a central midfielder by former manager Alex Ferguson, and even frequently benched.

He scored just 16 goals for the Red Devils as they romped to the Premier League title, powered by their new goal hero, RVP.

It seemed that Rooney was well behind the Dutchman in the pecking order still when David Moyes arrived at the club, and a transfer window flirtation with Chelsea ensued.

But having returned to action earlier than expected from injury to score in United’s weekend win over 10-man Crystal Palace, Moyes has confirmed that he ideally sees Rooney as RVP’s striker partner.

What’s more, Moyes has set his former charge at Everton a target of 30 goals this season, and is banking on him to achieve it.

“I think that for him it was a big moment. It was a great free-kick as well. The ability to get the ball up and down over the wall quickly was good," Moyes said of Wazza’s cracking strike against the Eagles.

"I will try to do that,” he added, stating his aim for Rooney to bag 30 goals.

“I think Wayne's aim will be to do that as well. Hopefully we can make that happen.”

Meanwhile, Moyes has confirmed that Rooney will play as a striker in tandem with RVP, and that he now feels his strikeforce is in rude health.

"The hope is that we get a partnership where folk are saying, 'My goodness we are having to play against Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney'. Everybody is looking to see if those two form a partnership that can score lots of goals. I have to say I have also got Chicharito [Javier Hernández] and Danny Welbeck. Danny has made a great start to the season," he said.

"Not just now. I can only see Wayne playing up top and playing as a forward for us," he added, insisting that Rooney’s view that he is a striker, and not a midfielder, has won the day.

"He has scored a lot of goals. It was down last year. But to be successful you need to have people who can score you 20 goals. I am hoping with Robin and Wayne you have two there who you would say they have it in them to do that. It was also good for us that Robin scored. A good start."
