Messi-less Argentina Suffer Shock Defeat To Ecuador

Argentina suffered a 2-0 shock defeat against Ecuador on Friday morning in their 2018 World Cup qualifier, with Sergio Aguero joining Lionel Messi on the injury list.

The Albiceleste went into the tie on a 13-match unbeaten run, and looked to attack straight from the first whistle, with Angel Di Maria's shot in the third minute signalling their intent.

Despite Argentina's start, Ecuador did not sit back, as they too came out flying – making for a mouthwatering first half to the encounter.

It was Ecuador who had the best chance of the first stanza, in the 11th minute, after Manchester United’s Antonio Valencia broke through on goal to square a pass to Jefferson Montero, but the ball was played too far ahead of him. The Ecuadorians were well in control at this point.

In the 24th minute, Sergio Aguero was replaced due to an injury, which caused unrest among the home fans, but the stadium lit up when Carlos Tevez entered the field of play.

The rest of the first half saw no clear-cut chances for either country, and the teams went into the break goalless.

The second 45 started similar to the first, but it was only in the 81st minute that the World Cup qualifier saw its first goal.

A corner was flicked on to Frickson Erazo, and the defender had to no trouble directing his header towards the back of the net, which was nothing less than what the away side deserved.

Ecuador added the the winner through Felipe Caicedo just two minutes later after the striker latched on to a Valencia cross to score, ending a night of misery for the Argentines.
