Ramos scored his 18th goal for La Furia Roja with his cheeky Panenka penalty in their 2-1 victory over Norway on Saturday.

In doing so, the 32-year-old edged ever closer to two-time World Cup winner Daniel Passarella's record for the defender who has scored the most goals for his country – Passarella netted 22 times for Argentina, according to Marca.

Ramos, who has scored in his past five consecutive appearances for Spain, can also still equal David Villa, Jose Martínez Sanchez – better known as Pirri – and Fernando Hierro's record of finding the back of the net in six consecutive games for the 2010 FIFA World Cup champions too.

With 18 goals in 162 games for Spain, the Los Blancos captain has outscored a host of other high-profile stars at international level.

AS Roma and Italy legend Francesco Totti enjoyed a successful career and won the 2006 FIFA World Cup with the Azzurri. However, the one-club legend's international goalscoring record was not the most prolific, with striker netting nine times in the 59 appearances he made for Italy.

Former Premier League superstar Nwankwo Kanu, who was crowned African Footballer of the Year in 1996 and 1999, enjoyed a successful career with Nigeria, which spanned the length of almost two decades. However, while the former Arsenal striker made 87 appearances for the Super Eagles, he only scored 13 goals for them.
