The 2021 Africa Cup of Nations was rescheduled due to the coronavirus pandemic, and will now take place in January next year.

The next few months could give many Europe-born players an indication as to where they stand with the managers of their national teams, especially with the European Championship set to take place in June.

For example, Arsenal's Eddie Nketiah might find it difficult to break into Gareth Southgate's England side due to the array of talent at the manager's disposal, and the forward could therefore seek to switch his allegiance to Ghana.

With a record 12 goals in 10 games for England's U21 side, the 21-year-old might be hoping to make it at international level sooner rather than later, especially as he could be behind the likes of Harry Kane, Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Tammy Abraham and Danny Ings in the Three Lions' fold.

Everton midfielder Abdoulaye Doucoure, who was born in France, is still eligible to represent Mali internationally. The 28-year-old played for the European country's youth sides growing up, but has never been called up for the senior team.

West Ham United centre-back Issa Diop, who is four years younger than his Premier League counterpart, is in a similar position, and he could make himself available for Senegal.

Manchester United duo Axel Tuanzebe and Aaron Wan-Bissaka are both eligible for DR Congo if they decide that their path into the Three Lions' set-up is a difficult one, while Moussa Dembele, who is on loan at Atletico Madrid from Olympique Lyon, remains available for Mali.

The 24-year-old scored a lot of goals for France at youth level, but is still waiting to be called up for Les Bleus' senior team, and the chances of Didier Deschamps calling upon him appear to be slim, especially with the striker having scored just one goal in 18 appearances in the 2020/21 season so far.
