McCarthy, who is Bafana Bafana's all-time top scorer with 31 strikes, enjoyed a trophy-laden playing career for both club and country, most notably picking up a Champions League medal as well as an Intercontinental Cup, which is now commonly known as the FIFA Club World Cup, title with Portuguese outfit FC Porto.
The now Cape Town City FC coach thrived under the tutelage of manager Jose Mourinho at Porto, and was instrumental in his side's Champions League success in the 2003/04 campaign, netting four goals en route to the UCL title.

While McCarthy remains the only South African to have tasted Champions League success, the former Ajax Amsterdam and Celta Vigo star is not the only player from Mzansi to have played in the competition.

After spending one season in the Absa Premiership, Masilela secured a dream move abroad, penning a four-year deal with Maccabi Haifa. During his spell in Israel, Masilela won two league titles (08/09) and (10/11), and was particularly influential in the latter campaign as Maccabi Haifa secured a place in the UEFA Champions League.
