According to The Sun, all of the players below have seen their shirt numbers being retired for various reasons.

Former Ivory Coast midfielder Cheick Tiote's No. 24 jersey was retired after he collapsed and passed away during a training session with Chinese Super League side Beijing Enterprises. The former Newcastle United star was loved by fans around the world and is remembered for his no-nonsense tackling.

Former Brazil international Aldair was honoured by Serie A side Roma back in 2003 when they decided to retire his famous No. 6 jersey. The defender spent 13 years at the club and played in more than 400 games for the Giallorossi to receive the special accolade. However, in 2013, the club brought the shirt number out of retirement when they signed Kevin Strootman – the Netherlands international had requested the Roma legend's shirt number, and was given consent by Aldair himself to take it.

Two clubs Marc-Vivien Foe played for decided to retire shirt numbers in memory of the tenacious former midfielder. The former Cameroon star collapsed while on duty with his national team at the 2003 FIFA Confederations Cup, and thereafter Premier League outfit Manchester City decided to retire the No. 23 jersey, while Lens gave up the No. 17.

Pirates 10, 13 & 22......but honestly i'm not a big fan of this nonsense of retiring jersey numbers because life must go on & that number doesn't belong to the player but the team.

Editor you must be specific when writing your headline, If your focus is in Europe just say so, so that we don't complain but if it's worldwide we expect African names to be included on your list not only South Africans, but Africans.
