Since the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, a number of players have called time on their international careers. Here are 10 stars who gave up playing for their national teams this year.

Spain, who were world champions between 2010 and 2014, began their new era under former FC Barcelona manager Luis Enrique this month, and there will certainly be some new, young faces in the side after La Furia Roja said goodbye to three stalwarts following the showpiece in Russia, namely centre-back Gerard Pique, midfielder Andres Iniesta and playmaker David Silva.
Former champions Germany also lost some players and their two biggest were probably striker Mario Gomez and midfielder Mesut Ozil. The Arsenal star was made a scapegoat following Germany's disastrous group-stage exit from the World Cup, while Gomez felt it was the right time to bow out, according to the BBC.
After a terrible campaign in Russia, Argentina stalwarts Javier Mascherano and Lucas Biglia called it a wrap on their international careers, which was not a total surprise to many as they are both in their mid-thirties already.

Others who also retired from international football this year include Wesley Sneijder (the Netherlands), Mario Mandzukic (Croatia) and Jamie Vardy (England).
