The Football Observatory is a research group within the International Centre for Sports Studies (CIES) that specialises in the statistical analysis of football.

The deal PSG agreed with Monaco for 18-year-old France international Kylian Mbappe was rated the most overpriced transfer of the window. CIES calculated the gap between the actual amounts paid for the players in Europe's top five leagues to the estimated values of the players at the time of the transfer, which the stats institute determine based on their own algorithm.

The striker's value was estimated to be €92.6 million (R1.42 billion), but the Ligue 1 side agreed to pay €180 million (R2.77 billion) for his services, meaning they overpaid Monaco by €87.4 million (R1.34 billion).

Ousmane Dembele's move from Borussia Dortmund to FC Barcelona ranks second on the list. The Frenchman is said to be worth €95.8 million (R1.47 billion), but the Blaugrana ended up paying €147 million (R2.26 billion), €51.2 million (R787 million) more than they should have, according to CIES.

Former Monaco defender Benjamin Mendy is in third place after he joined the Citizens for a fee of about €57.5 million (R884 million). The CIES believe that the France international is only worth €28.5 million (R438 million), and feel that Pep Guardiola's side overpaid by €29 million (R446 million).

Everton sees two of their new signings feature in fourth and fifth place. The signing of Jordan Pickford saw the Toffees overpay Sunderland by €27.5 million (R423 million), according to CIES, who also believe that they overpaid by €25.2 million (R387 million) for midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson from Swansea.

Other players who feature in CIES' top 10 are Mamadou Sakho, Patrik Schick, Nemanja Matic, Harry Maguire and Davide Zappacosta.
