10 Footballers Who've Been Victim To Racism

With Mohamed Salah being subjected to Islamophobic abuse - here are ten occasions where footballers endured acts of racism, including a former FC Barcelona and Real Madrid striker, who was crowned African Player of the Year four times.

Salah, who is currently the leading African goalscorer across Europe's top five leagues with 17 goals in 26 EPL appearances, was forced to endure abuse hurled at him in the Red's 1-1 draw with West Ham United, which led to an investigation subsequently being launched into the incident.
While the latest incident involving the former Chelsea FC star will be thoroughly reviewed in a bid to thwart out all forms of discrimination from the game, other footballers, who experienced similar injustices, were at times, not as fortunate as Salah was in seeking out justice for enduring discrimination at the hands of fans, fellow teammates or opponents.
Despite being the only footballer to have ever won back-to-back European trebles with Barcelona and Inter Milan in 2010, Samuel Eto’s trophy-laden career did not make him immune to racism.
The legendary Cameroonian forward walked off the pitch in an act of defiance for Barcelona in 2006 after being harassed by a small number of Real Zaragoza. Eto was eventually persuaded by coach Frank Rijkaard to see out the game.
In March 2006, Adebowale Ogungbure could no longer handle the continuous racial abuse hurled his way by Hallesche FC supporters. The Nigerian midfielder vented his anger by making a Nazi gesture towards the fans.
Due to German law, Ogungbure was arrested for the gesture, but the charges were dropped, with fans getting together to create an anti-racism campaign using the victim's name titled “Wir sind Ade" or "We are Ade-bowale"
Italian striker Mario Balotelli, who has never strayed too far from controversy in his career, was the victim of racial abuse hurled at him by sections of the Bastia fan base in 2017.
The former Ligue 1 outfit were slapped with a one-point suspended deduction and were ordered to close part of their stadium for three matches.
Newly-signed Barcelona loanee Kevin-Prince Boateng was forced to leave Italy after being made the victim of racist abuse by several opposition clubs in Italy.
The situation eventually reached boiling point for the Ghanaian, who walked off the pitch in a friendly encounter against fourth division outfit Pro Patria.
Despite Pro Patria being ordered to play one match behind closed doors and being ordered to pay a fine, the damage had already been done for Boateng, who called time on his stay in Milan, joining German outfit Schalke six months after the incident.
Former Barcelona and Juventus defender Dani Alves also forms part of this list, after he famously picked up a banana thrown at him by a supporter in 2014 and ate it - to see some other top footballers who suffered similar fates, click through the gallery above!
