Absa Premiership outfit Chiefs took to their official Twitter account on Thursday afternoon to announce that midfielder Meyiwa was forced to hang up his boots at the tender age of 19 following a serious car accident in 2018.

Unfortunately, he is not the only footballer who has suffered such a fate. Two-time FIFA World Cup winner Ronaldo Nazario, who played for both Barcelona and Real, was one of the greatest strikers ever to have graced the game, but despite his array of individual accolades and undeniable talent, the former Brazil superstar's career was severely curtailed by a number of long-term injuries.

He announced his retirement in February 2011, with many believing that, had it not been for the injuries he suffered, Ronaldo could have gone on to achieve even more great things in his glittering career.

Most notably known for his incredible strike in the 1998 UEFA European Championship final against the Soviet Union, Marco van Basten enjoyed widespread success with boyhood club Ajax Amsterdam and Serie A giants AC Milan.

At club level, the Dutchman registered 276 goals in 373 games, while finding the back of the net on 24 occasions in the 58 games he featured in for the Netherlands. A recurring ankle injury led to Van Basten's downfall, however, with the former Ajax youth academy graduate eventually forced into early retirement in 1995, at the age of 30.

FIFA World Cup record holder Just Fontaine, who netted the most goals in a single World Cup campaign (13), is another player who had his career cut short by injuries, having been forced into early retirement at the age of 28 after twice breaking his leg in 1960 – to see some other top footballers who suffered similar fates, click through the gallery above!
