10 Coaches Who Bounced Back After Terrible Managerial Debuts

With Thierry Henry suffering humiliation in his first managerial job, here are 10 coaches who suffered a similar fate but bounced back strongly, including Zinedine Zidane and Jose Mourinho.

Click through the gallery above to see 10 managers who bounced back after enduring terrible debut coaching spells, according to Transfermarkt.

Henry, a 1998 FIFA World Cup winner, was handed his coaching debut in France's top flight with Monaco in 2018, but lasted only 20 matches at the helm of the Ligue 1 outfit, mustering only one victory in the process, before he was relieved of his duties, with Leonardo Jardim subsequently taking over the reins.

Henry's journey into the world of coaching certainly did not go as planned, but the former FC Barcelona and New York Red Bulls star isn't the only high-profile name to have had coaching debuts.

As per FourFourTwo, former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger endured a miserable stint with French outfit Nancy in the 1984/85 season.

The Frenchman experienced three difficult years at the helm of Nancy, which include relegation in his final season. He subsequently joined AS Monaco, clinching the 1987/88 league title in his first campaign with the Monegasques.

Former Manchester United coach Jose Mourinho, who has won more trophies in his managerial career than Manchester City coach Pep Guardiola has, also appears in our gallery.

The two-time UEFA Champions League-winning coach was unveiled as Benfica's coach in September 2000, but vacated the position two and a half months later after newly-elected club president Manuel Vilarinho refused to give into Mourinho's demands of a contract extension.

Three-time World Player of the Year Zinedine Zidane enjoyed arguably the most memorable transformation from player to coach and from assistant coach to manager.

Zidane was handed his coaching debut with Real Madrid's reserve team, known as Real Madrid Castilla, in 2014, but things did not go as planned for the former Juventus superstar, who lost five of his first six matches in charge of the team.

The situation became a dire one when "Zizou" was banned from coaching Castilla for not having his UEFA Pro Licence, with the French legend suffering a humiliating 3-0 defeat in his last game at the helm of the team.

In his first full season in charge, Zidane led Castilla to sixth position on the table, one spot shy of a play-off position.

Despite being expected to return to the second-division outfit, Zidane never did and instead took up the position of Real's first-team head coach, leading the LaLiga giants to the unheralded success of three Champions League titles, two FIFA Club World Cups, two UEFA Super Cups, a Spanish Super Cup title as well as the LaLiga title.

Others managers on the list include Antonio Conte, Bobby Robson, Diego Simeone and Rafael Benitez – click through the gallery above to see all 10 names!
