The world's biggest football tournament starts in June 2018, when supporters will see the best footballers represent their countries and fight to become champions of the world.

A few players at the tournament, such as France's Samuel Umtiti, England's Raheem Sterling and Spain's Diego Costa, might have been wearing different colours or not even been at the World Cup this year if they did not decide against representing the nations they were born in.

Although Umtiti has lived in France for most of his life, he was born in Cameroon, while Manchester City's Sterling was born in Jamaica, and Costa was born in Lagarto, Brazil.

Many past players are included in the gallery, including French legend Patrick Vieira, who was born in Senegal. Former France captain Marcel Desailly also chose not to represent his country of birth, Ghana.

Former Die Mannschaft strikers Miroslav Klose and Lukas Podolski were both born in Poland, but moved to Germany as youngsters.

While Podolski played 130 times for Germany, Klose represented them 137 times and is their all-time top goalscorer with 71 strikes.

Former FC Barcelona playmaker Deco is also in the gallery. Although he played for Portugal 75 times from 2003 until 2010, his Brazilian flair was not hard to spot.

The attacking midfielder, whose full name is Anderson Luis de Souza, was born in Brazil in 1977, but made his debut for Portugal in 2003.

Two other Brazilian-born footballers who represented different countries are Marcos Senna and Pepe. Like Deco, Pepe played for Portugal on the international stage, while Senna played for Spain.

Marcel Desailly is the worst of them all! He even changed his name from Odenke Abbey to Marcel Desailly, the amount of self-hate he must have had is sure out of this world.
