According to Spanish publication Don Balon, United have submitted a £92 million (R1.6 billion) offer for Gareth Bale.
The Welshman struggled with injuries in the past season, and Marco Asensio's rise up the pecking order at the club has offered Los Blancos an immediate replacement if they decide to sell their club record signing.
As a consequence, it has now been claimed that Real are seriously considering United's offer as it could be their last chance to get close to what they paid for the 28-year-old.
The Spanish giants bought Bale for €101 million (R1.59 billion) in 2013 – then a world record fee – and could now recoup almost the whole amount if they accept the Red Devils' €99 million (R1.56 billion) offer.
"I think, from our point of view, my opinion is that La Liga, the tempo and physicality is completely different to the Premier League," Wales boss Chris Coleman said when asked about the rumours recently.
"Technically, some of the teams there are absolutely tip-top.
"Being selfish, he's better off at Real Madrid. You work all your life to get the top, you don't want to give that up.
"Where do you go from Real Madrid that's better? There's one or two clubs up there but none better."
Bale has scored one goal and assisted two further strikes in his first four appearances for Real this season.
