Three players in the most expensive XI ever claimed their place in the illustrious line-up in this window. Alisson Becker became the most expensive goalkeeper when he joined Liverpool from AS Roma for €62.5 million (R984 million).
The backline consists of three Manchester City defenders, namely Kyle Walker, who cost €52.7 million (R830 million), John Stones at €55.6 million (R875 million), and Benjamin Mendy at €57.5 million (R905 million). The City trio are joined by Virgil van Dijk, who completed a €78.8 million (R1.24 billion) move from Southampton to Liverpool in January.
Another January signing, Philippe Coutinho, appears in midfield after the Brazilian completed a €125 million (R1.97 billion) transfer from Liverpool to FC Barcelona. He is joined by Paul Pogba, whose €105 million (R1.65 billion) move from Juventus to Manchester United broke the transfer record in 2016, as did Zinedine Zidane's, whose €77.5 million (R1.22 billion) switch from Juventus to Real Madrid makes him the third-most expensive midfielder in history.
Up front, Kylian Mbappe became the costliest player of the current window after completing his €135 million (R2.12 billion) – excluding add-ons worth another €45 million (R708 million) – permanent move from AS Monaco to Paris Saint-Germain, while Neymar's €222 million (R3.5 billion) transfer from FC Barcelona to PSG broke the transfer world record last season.
Cristiano Ronaldo, meanwhile, became the most expensive striker (we expect him to start up front for Juventus rather than on the left wing) when he moved at a cost of €100 million (R1.57 billion) between Real and Juventus.
Overall, the most expensive transfers XI cost a whopping €1.07 billion (R15 billion), and it remains to be seen when the next mega transfer will break into the costliest line-up in football history.
