According to reports, Manchester United and Real Madrid are set to compete in a bidding war for Athletic Bilbao’s 20-year-old French defender Aymeric Laporte.
According to Marca, Real Madrid are interested in paying the Frenchman’s release clause, which stands at a staggering €42 million, while The Mail have reported that Manchester United would also like to act on their long-standing interest in the talented centre-back.
The Basque club are reportedly not interested in entering negotiations with any interested parties and if any team is interested in luring Laporte away from Bilbao, they have no choice but to meet his buyout clause.
This situation favours Manchester United, however, because they have no concerns with the fact that Laporte is cup-tied for the UEFA Champions League. Madrid, meanwhile, will be hoping that Laporte and his international teammate, Raphael Varane, can serve as long-term successors to Pepe and Sergio Ramos.
Aymeric Laporte has made 23 appearances for Athletic Bilbao in all competitions, averaging 2.3 tackles and 3.9 interceptions per game.
