Jean Michael Seri, who was born in Ivory Coast, impressed for OGC Nice in France last camapign and deservedly ended up in the Ligue1 Team of the Season.
The 26-year-old reportedly had a gentlemen’s agreement with Nice coach Lucien Favre that he could leave for €40 million (R623m). But when Barcelona allegedly bid this amount Nice insisted the verbal clause had expired by the end of July.
Seri himself was furious when he found out his ‘dream move’ to Barcelona broke down and lashed out at the club.
“I'm not going to lie – I feel awful, I did not play for Nice this weekend because football should be about joy and I did not feel this,” he said, as quoted by DailyMail.
“My dream of joining Barcelona has been broken and this is terrible for me. From what I understand, the deal did not go through because of financial reasons and that makes me very sad.'
“I was stunned to hear negotiations had broken down after my talk with Barcelona officials the previous evening, I was shattered.
“It was incomprehensible to me so the next day I went to the offices at Nice and I exploded with anger, honestly, the walls shattered!
“The leaders of my club could not tell me anything, they could not even look me in the eye.”
Seri insisted that his move to Barcelona was not the first offer Nice rejected this window.
“I want to sign for a big European club like Juventus, PSG, Arsenal, Borussia Dortmund, Liverpool or for example, Roma, who have made several offers,” he added.
“I have spoken many times with (Roma’s technical director) Monchi, but an agreement with Nice was not possible.
“I played against Napoli out of loyalty to my teammates, this was not their fault but honestly I don't know what will happen now.”
The Ivorian would have become the eighth African player in Barcelona’s history and you can find the others in our gallery.
