According to the Daily Mirror, all the stars featured in the gallery above have tried their luck with forcing an exit from teams but were quickly put back in line by the clubs that owned them, even if only for one more season or two.

In 2011, Tottenham Hotspur played hardball with Croatian midfielder Luka Modric. The playmaker tried to force a move to Chelsea, but his club would not allow it. He was not happy with the decision and decided to go public, claiming that the Lilywhites had broken a "gentleman's agreement" allowing him to join "a bigger club" if one came calling. Modric ended up staying one more season, and was then sold to Real Madrid.

Former Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney was accused of trying to engineer a move away during his time at Old Trafford. At the beginning of the 2013/14 season, right after Sir Alex Ferguson retired, there were rumours linking the Englishman with Chelsea. The player's reluctance to quash the talk got people thinking he wanted to move, but the club apparently told the striker he was going nowhere.

After an incredible 2007/08 season, Cristiano Ronaldo wanted to join Real Madrid, but then Red Devils manager Ferguson dug in his heels and did not let the move happen at the first attempt. The Portuguese star was forced to stay one more season before getting his chance to join Los Blancos.
