Cristiano Ronaldo Sets Unwanted Record

Real Madrid superstar Cristiano Ronaldo is known for breaking records left, right and centre, but he set an unwanted World Cup record during Portugal's controversial 1-1 draw with Iran.

The Portuguese conceded a late equaliser following a controversial penalty for Iran after a VAR review, which saw them drop from first spot to second position in Group B.

As a consequence, A Selecao will face Group A winners Uruguay, who are yet to concede a goal and have won all their games in the tournament so far, in the round of 16.

Ronaldo, though, could have avoided the tricky tie had he put his side 2-0 up from the penalty spot, adding to Ricardo Quaresma's stunner on the brink of half-time.

However, the 33-year-old missed the chance to double Portugal's lead from the spot in the 53rd minute. In so doing, he became the first Portugal player to miss a penalty in a World Cup match (shootouts excluded) since the country's first participation in 1966, as Opta Sports pointed out.

His penalty kick, which was saved by Iran goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand, was the 19th of this year's competition, breaking the record for the most penalties awarded in a World Cup tournament.

Eighteen spot-kicks were awarded at the 2002 edition in Japan and South Korea, but the two penalties in the clash between Iran and Portugal – Karim Ansarifard converted a late penalty for Iran – set the new record.

Ronaldo remains on four goals in the tournament, with only England's Harry Kane, with five strikes, having scored more so far.
