Golden Boot Contenders Round 1

The first round of World Cup fixtures has passed and the likes of Neymar, Thomas Muller and Robin van Persie have all lived up to the expectations.

What an exciting start into the tournament it has been with 47 goals being scored already – more than at any previous World Cups at this stage.

We have been previewing the players, who will mainly be responsible for producing the goods in Brazil and many of them haven’t disappointed. Here an update on the current Golden Boot standings.

Golden Boot Race Round One:

1)      Thomas Muller (3 goals)

2)      Neymar, Arjen Robben, Robin van Persie, Karim Benzema (2 goals)

3)      Lionel Messi, Alexis Sanchez, Mario Balotelli (1 goal)

Germany’s Thomas Muller is leading the Golden Boot race after round one. The 24-year-old scored a hat-trick against Portugal and has now already scored eight World Cup goals in only seven caps since 2010.

While Robben and Van Persie ran riot in the Netherlands' 5-1 thrashing against defending champions Spain, Neymar saved his country in the opening game and turned a one-goal disadvantage into a 2-1 lead.

Benzema scored his first two goals against Honduras. The Frenchman scored the first and the third in his country's 3-0 victory, while France's second was rated as an own-goal after Benzema’s header hit the post and went from the back of the Honduras keeper into the net.

Messi scored Argentina’s second goal in their 2-1 over Bosnia and Herzegovina, after he struggled in the first half. It was only his second goal at World Cup stage and his celebration proved how much weight had been laying on his shoulders.

Mario Balotelli’s header gave Italy a vital 2-1 victory over England, and Alexis Sanchez was instrumental in Chile’s 3-1 over Australia, scoring the first goal for his side.
