Man Utd Down Resilient Derby
FA Cup Report: Manchester United v Derby 05 December 2018
Result: Manchester United 2-0 Derby County
Date: 5 January 2018
Venue: Old Trafford
Two late goals saw Manchester United to a 2-0 win over Derby in the third round of the FA Cup on Friday night at Old Trafford.
The Red Devils went on the front foot early on, heaping pressure on the Derby defence. Paul Pogba went close with his long-range shot in the ninth minute, but fired just off target. Marcus Rashford then shot narrowly over the bar 10 minutes later.
United continued to push for an opener and Scott Carson was forced into action by Juan Mata, pushing his 21st minute free-kick behind for a corner. However, Sergio Romero was worked at the other end straight afterwards, keeping out Marcus Olsson’s header.
Rashford was then denied by the post from close range in the 35th minute after meeting Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s cross in from the right before Carson made yet another save from a free-kick in the 42nd minute — this time to deny Pogba.
The hosts continued to create chances at the beginning of the second half, but Derby held firm. In the 69th minute, Pogba threatened to finally breach them, but curled his shot from the edge of the box just wide of the post.
Then, in the 71st minute, Rashford rattled the post yet again with a fierce shot fired across the keeper from a difficult angle.
In the 77th minute, Carson parried Lingard’s shot into the path of Pogba, but the Frenchman failed to capitalise on the chance to slot home with the keeper stranded, firing wide of goal.
United’s breakthrough came at last in the 84th minute. A slick team move ended with Romelu Lukaku teeing Jesse Lingard up for a fierce long-range shot, which beat Carson and put the Red Devils on the verge of progress.
Lukaku hammered the final nail in the coffin in stoppage time, slotting home the game-clincher after linking up with Anthony Martial.
