West Brom Stun Liverpool in FA Cup
FA Cup Report: Liverpool v West Bromwich Albion 27 January 2018
English FA Cup
Result: Liverpool 2-3 West Bromwich Albion
Date: 27 January 2018
West Bromwich Albion came back from behind to dump Liverpool out of the FA Cup in their fourth round fixture at Anfield on Saturday.
The Reds got the game off to the best possible start when a defensive mix-up gifted them a fifth minute opener. Ben Foster was able to save Mohamed Salah’s effort after the Egyptian pounced on the ball, but could do nothing to stop Roberto Firmino on the follow-up.
It took a mere 68 seconds for the Baggies to equalise, with Jay Rodriguez finding the net with a thunderbolt from just inside the box after being set up by Chris Brunt.
Rodriguez’s second goal was surely an even tougher pill to swallow for the Reds — even if less spectacular than the first. Kieran Gibbs played the ball in from the left, setting him up for an 11th minute tap-in.
West Brom looked as if they had doubled their lead in the 19th minute, when Craig Dawson beat Simon Mignolet with a header. However, referee Craig Pawson overturned the goal upon consultation with the VAR, ruling that Gareth Barry had interfered with play from an offside position.
The VAR was called into action again shortly afterwards, awarding Liverpool a penalty for a foul from Jake Livermore on Salah. However, Firmino missed his spot-kick, hitting the crossbar.
Liverpool continued to push forward in search of an equaliser, but all their hard work was undone when Joel Matip deflected the ball into his own net from Dawson’s cross to send Liverpool into the break two goals down.
The Reds initially struggled to get going in the second half, but eventually began to heap pressure on the Albion defence. Salah pulled a goal back in the 78th minute with a well-hit shot into the bottom corner.
However, Liverpool were unable to complete the comeback and slumped to yet another loss against opponents who most would have expected them to see off.
