Van Dijk Nets Derby Winner On Liverpool Debut
FA Cup Report: Liverpool v Everton 05 January 2018
English FA Cup
Result: Liverpool 2-1 Everton
Date: 5 January 2018
Virgil van Dijk got his Liverpool career off to a dream start as he scored the winner in their 2-1 win over Everton in the third round of the FA Cup.
New signing van Dijk made his Liverpool debut in a high-stakes encounter. Everton showed from the start that they were not intending to afford him an easy introduction to life at Anfield.
However, although Sam Allardyce’s side looked bright early on, Liverpool threatened to take the lead in the 26th minute. James Milner met a ball from Joe Gomez, but fired his shot just wide of goal.
Adam Lallana then won the Reds a penalty in the 34th minute, with Mason Holgate adjudged to have fouled him. Milner stepped up to the spot and put the hosts in front.
Holgate was at the centre of controversy again minutes later as his push on Roberto Firmino incensed the Brazilian. The two players clashed, but no cards were issued.
Liverpool threatened to double their lead early in the second half, with Joe Gomez heading wide of goal and Andrew Robertson forcing a save from Jordan Pickford.
However, the next goal was scored by the Toffees, who hit the Reds with a superb counter in the 67th minute. Phil Jagielka set up Gylfi Sigurdsson for the finish and he fired into the bottom corner.
There was to be another sensational twist as Virgil van Dijk rose up to head home the winner following a corner, which Pickford failed to deal with.
The £75 million signing’s priceless goal sent Liverpool through to the fourth round and sent their bitter local rivals packing.
