Liverpool will have to travel to Bolton for a replay after they drew 0-0 at Anfield in the FA Cup on Saturday.
The first half was off to a relatively quiet start but the Reds increased the tempo as the half wore on and had a close call in the 31st minute. Raheem Sterling got on the end of a long pass and made room for a strike but Matthew Mills got a foot to the ball, taking all the power from the shot.
The hosts had a big penalty appeal turned down five minutes into the second half. Lazar Markovic looked clean through on goal before he was taken down in the area by Mills, but the referee waved away the protests, leaving the home players fuming.
Liverpool were denied by a superb save from Adam Bogdan in the 54th minute. Coutinho picked out Sterling in space in the box but just as he was about to steer the ball into the back of the net, Bogan slid off his line to make the goal-saving block.
Javi Manquillo had a howler five minutes later. Coutinho's initial shot was parried by Bogdan but only as far as Manquillo who was only a few yards from goal. However, he somehow directed the ball wide when it would have been easier to score.
Bolton created a chance of their own in the 65th minute when Eidur Gudjohnsen found himself in a scoring position, but he sent his strike well over the bar.
Bogdan kept his clean sheet in tact with another top save in the 71st minute. Coutinho passed towards Borini on the left and he took a first-time shot, forcing a diving save from the Bolton keeper as the sides played out to a goalless draw.
