UEFA Europa League
Result: FK Partizan 0-1 Manchester United
Date: 24 October 2019
Venue: Stadion FK Partizan
Manchester United claimed their first away win since March earlier this year thanks to Anthony Martial's solitary strike in Europa League action on Thursday night.
Sergio Romero started ahead of David De Gea in the United goal, while Anthony Martial led the line in place of Marcus Rashford who started from the bench.
The English side threatened the opener on 15 minutes, but Scott McTominay’s header at the back post hit the side-netting following Juan Mata’s curling delivery.
United rattled the left hand post eight minutes before halftime following a low shot from Jesse Lingard from the edge of the area after a skilful pass from Aaron Wan-Bissaka, while the home side responded with their best opening a minute later as Sadiq cracked the post with a sharp curler from outside the area.
The Red Devils finished the half the strongest on 43 minutes as Brandon Williams earned a penalty after being brought down in the area, granting Martial to send Vladimir Stojkovic the wrong way for the opening goal.
Partizan made a strong start to the second half, as Seydouba Souma fired a low shot from close metres after evading a challenge from Harry Maguire.
The visitors turned their structure around following the 60th minute, removing goal-scorer Martial for Rashford while Daniel James replaced Aaron Wan-Bissaka.
The Serbians didn’t rest on their laurels towards the final quarter, sending United into overdrive defending with threatening penalty appeals and half-chances amongst others.
Partizan grew ever close to the equaliser in the final seven minutes, but a snap effort from Takuma Asano was palmed away by Romero, as the Red Devils claimed all the points to top the group ahead of the return fixture set for Old Trafford in two weeks time.
