Loan deals are considered valuable options for a number of clubs for a number of reasons. Some see the option of a short-term deal as an opportunity to see if a player is a worthwhile signing in the long run, while others use it as a way to finance a deal or because they lack funds for a permanent arrangement.
A number of clubs have made use of the loan market in this window, including Premier League side Arsenal, who signed Dani Ceballos from Real Madrid. The Spanish midfielder joined the Gunners last month and has already assumed the No. 8 jersey left that became available following Aaron Ramsey's departure.
Real have been fairly active in offloading players on short-term deals, and also sent former wonderkid Martin Odegaard on loan to Real Sociedad. The 20-year-old has spent the past two campaigns out on loan, having previously enjoyed spells with Heerenveen and Vitesse Arnhem.
Italian giants Inter Milan have also made a loan signing in the form of Nicolo Barella, 22, who joined the club on an initial season-long loan, although he will sign for the Nerazzurri permanently at the end of the 2019/20 campaign – click through the gallery above to see 12 top loan signings that have occurred in this window!
