Spain Top Group C With 2-0 Win Over Slovakia
Euro 2016 Qualifier
Result: Spain 2-0 Slovakia
Date: 5 September 2015
Venue: Estadio Nuevo Carlos Tartiere
Spain moved into first position in Group C after a 2-0 win over Slovakia in their Euro 2016 qualifier on Saturday.
The hosts were out of the blocks in a flash, taking the lead in the fifth minute. David Silva was the architect as he played a deft little chip over the defence from just outside the area, allowing Jordi Alba to run onto the ball and head it home.
Slovakia were left with a mountain to climb in the 28th minute when they conceded a controversial penalty. Cesc Fabregas played a delightful ball over the top for Diego Costa to run onto, but the onrushing keeper was penalised for bringing down the player even though there seemed to be little contact.
The experienced head of Andres Iniesta was employed to take the spot kick in the 30th minute and made no mistake as he placed the penalty in the bottom left corner.
Marek Hamsik almost scored what would have been a sensational goal for the visitors just before the break when he pounced on a bouncing ball on the edge of the box, but his half-volley was well saved by Iker Casillas.
Pedro threatened to extend the lead to three goals shortly after the restart as he rifled a shot at goal but it was tipped over by the keeper.
Spain came within inches of making it three in stoppage time as Serge Busquets unleashed a shot from 25 yards out that skimmed the post.
