If Sergio Ramos features in both of Spain's matches against Romania and Faroe Islands, he will equal Iker Casillas' record of 167 international appearances and become the nation's joint-most capped player of all time.
The 33-year-old Real Madrid star is joined in the national team squad by club teammates Dani Carvajal and Dani Ceballos (on loan at Arsenal), but Marco Asensio and Isco both miss out through injury.
Head coach Robert Moreno has elected to overlook a number of stars for his latest selection, including the attacking quartet of Iago Aspas, Diego Costa, Alvaro Morata and Inaki Williams, while Atletico Madrid midfielder Koke is another surprise exclusion.
Spain travel to Romania for their first encounter on 5 September before playing host to Faroe Islands in Gijon three days later. La Furia Roja won all four of their previous qualifying matches and currently sit at the top of Group F in the qualification standings.
