EURO 2020 Qualifier
Result: Spain 4-0 Faroe Islands
Date: 08 September 2019
Venue: Estadio Municipal El Molinón
Spain are on the brink of qualifying for the 2020 European Championship after thrashing Faroe Islands 4-0 at the Estadio Municipal El Molinón on Sunday night.
Only Sergio Ramos and Rodrigo kept their spots from La Roja's win over Romania on Thursday, with goalkeeper David de Gea among those given a run, replacing Kepa Arrizabalaga between the sticks.
After a bright start, the hosts eventually opened the scoring in the 13th minute courtesy of Rodrigo Moreno, who slotted from close range following a square pass from Mikel Oyarzabal.
Faroe Islands were giving Robert Moreno’s charges scares on counter-attacks but it was La Roja who came close to making it 2-0 with six minutes remaining of the first stanza, after Thiago Alcantara delivered cross inside box that found Rodrigo, who guided his header over the bar.
La Roja came back from the break playing with more urgency as Rodrigo eventually doubled their lead five minutes inside the second stanza, with a curling left-footed strike that took a deflection towards the goal to complete his brace.
Spain were taking their foot off the gas after going two goals ahead, with a couple of substitutions slowing down the tempo of the match. Joannes Bjartalid had a glorious chance to pull a goal back for the visitors with 16 minutes remaining but he failed to beat De Gea in a one-on-one situation.
With time running outm Paco Alcacer managed to find the third goal for the home side in the last minute of regulation time with a first-time finish inside the box, after combining with Alcantara.
Alcacer then rounded off the scoring Spain in stoppage time after nodding home cross from Jose Gaya as La Roja ran out convincing winners on the night, and now only need one more win to secure qualification to next year's tournament.
