Spain Consolidate Top Spot In Group C
Euro 2016 Qualifiers
Result: Ukraine 0-1 Spain
Date: 12 October 2015
Venue: NSK Olimpijs'kyj
Spain maintained their strangle hold over Group C in the Euro 2016 qualifiers with a 1-0 win in Ukraine on Monday.
Cesc Fabregas provided the first real threat in the eighth minute when he put his shot at goal just over the bar following some industrious build-up play from Isco.
The deadlock was broken by the visitors in the 21st minute. Thiago sent a cross towards the far post after he was put through into the box by Nolito. Mario Gaspar was on hand to head home with power for a goal on his debut.
Ukraine were in deep trouble in the 23rd minute when they gave away a penalty. Nolito passed for Fabregas in the area and the latter was taken out by Kucher. However, Fabregas failed to convert the spot-kick, seeing the goalkeeper paw it away instead.
La Roja thought they were two goals clear just before the hour mark when they put the ball into the back of the net. However, the referee disallowed it and blew for an earlier foul, bringing the play back.
Ukraine created a chance out of nothing in the last five minutes when a loose ball in the Spain box bounced favourably for Stepanenko, but his shot went just off target.
