Why Yaya Isn't Guardiola's Biggest Fan

Following Yaya Toure's controversial comments about Pep Guardiola after his latest UEFA Champions League failure, it is important to remember why the African legend is not a huge fan of his former Manchester City and FC Barcelona boss.

The Ivorian has raised questions over the Spanish tactician's future in England, and while Guardiola's recent Champions League loss to Olympique Lyon was seen as a huge failure, perhaps Toure's remarks come from a different place.

In 2010, the midfielder left Barcelona for City after he felt he was denied opportunities in the middle of the park. He was used in central defence at times due to injuries to key players, and wanted answers as to why he was not seen as one of them.

About 12 months after leaving the Catalan giants, Toure said he and Guardiola did not speak in their final year together in Spain, and even went as far as to say that he wanted to hang up his boots at the Blaugrana but his manager had other plans.

"If he had talked to me, I would have stayed at Barcelona. I did not want to go, and wanted to end my career at Barcelona. However, he had no faith in me," he told ONA FM nine years ago.

Due to their clear fallout, many were interested to see how Toure and Guardiola would get on in Manchester, where they reunited in 2016 following the Spaniard's departure from German giants Bayern Munich.

While they tried keeping their relationship cordial, the African superstar had some harsh words for the City boss upon his eventual exit from the Etihad in 2018, accusing Guardiola of not liking black footballers. Toure didn't hold back, and, as many expected, Guardiola denied his ex-player's claims.

In the same explosive interview, Toure said Guardiola was jealous of the midfielder, and that "every time we passed each other, he seemed embarrassed. As if I made him a little self-conscious. As if, also, he had understood that I knew him perfectly."

So, while he is undoubtedly one of the greatest coaches in history, given the many pieces of silverware he has picked up since his managerial debut in 2008, perhaps Toure doesn't view him that way, and instead sees him as the man who forced him out of Barcelona, and then out of City.
