According to the BBC, the Everton striker has agreed a deal in principle with Washington-based side DC United for a reported fee of £12.5 million (R208 million).
The England international's representatives have apparently been in the US for weeks already in a bid to negotiate a deal that will see him leave his boyhood club for the second time in his career.
The uncertainty over Sam Allardyce's position at Goodison Park has apparently sparked Rooney to consider his options, and it seems the 32-year-old feels it may be time to move away from the English top flight.
After the Red Devils' 0-0 draw with West Ham United on Thursday, Rooney's former manager Jose Mourinho was asked what he thought of the rumours.
"When he made it at Everton, his boyhood club, the world was surprised with that kid," Mourinho answered, as quoted by FourFourTwo.
"Then he goes to Manchester United and has an incredible career. Then he is in the Premier League again with Everton, so I think his career in England was perfect.
"What next? He decides. MLS? In MLS, you always have some iconic players who are going to end their career there. You have Gerrard, Lampard, Vieira, so many of them. Now you have Zlatan and Wayne. So I hope he enjoys it.
"Of course, he will bring the attention that MLS needs to attract more people to steal from the other sports that normally the American people are in love with."
Rooney has made 491 appearances in the Premier League so far, scoring 208 goals and assisting a further 111 strikes.
