Man City Qualify For Last 16 After Thrilling Draw

UEFA Champions League

Result: Olympique Lyon 2-2 Manchester City

Date: 27 November 2018

Venue: Groupama Stadium

Manchester City qualified for the knockout rounds in the UEFA Champions League after playing to an entertaining 2-2 draw with Olympique Lyon in their penultimate Group F clash on Tuesday night.

After a slow start to the game, the Citizens started to show attacking intent after ten minutes but Lyon were not giving much away.

Leroy Sane and David Silva were particularly dangerous on the break for City, but their combination was not bringing clear chances as the hosts defended deep.

The visitors were moving the ball quicker before halftime but they could not bring Lyon goalkeeper Anthony Lopes into action and went into the halftime break level pegging.

Maxwel Cornet did find the breakthrough for Bruno Genesio’s troops ten minutes into the second stanza with a spectacular strike from the edge of the box after Memphis Depay played a quick short free-kick, 1-0.

City equalised in the 62nd minute through Aymeric Laporte, who powered a header past Lopes after a flick on by Silva following a free-kick, 1-1.

The Ligue 1 side did not sit back as Cornet restored the lead for the hosts nine minutes before time following a counter-attack to complete his brace.

However, Sergio Aguero brought parity for the Citizens two minutes later with a header at the near post following a corner, 2-2.

There was still time for a late winner for either side, however they could not get clear chances and they shared the spoils.

City top Group F with ten points with only one game remaining while Lyon are second with seven points.
