Championship Play-Off Final
Result: Huddersfield 0 (4)-(3) 0 Reading
Date: 29 May 2017
Venue: Wembley Stadium
Huddersfield secured promotion to the English Premier League after defeating Reading 4-3 on penalties at Wembley Stadium.
Huddersfield threatened early on and went close after five minutes when an un-marked Michael Hefele headed wide from close range.
David Wagner's charges missed another golden chance five minutes later as Isiah Brown somehow missed an open goal from two-yards out.
Reading, on the other hand, started seeing more of the ball after 20 minutes, but were finding it tough to carve out chances.
That proved to be the trend from both clubs for the rest of the opening stanza, as they went into the break all square.
The Royals came out fighting in the second half and carved out a couple half chances through Yann Kermorgant in the opening 10 minutes.
Both sides opted for a change after 60 minutes as Jordan Obita came on for Reading, while Huddersfield introduced Collin Quaner.
Huddersfield could have broken the deadlock in the 76th minutes but Quaner fires horribly wide, despite Wells being in a better position.
Neither side could carve out an opening in the final 15 minutes of the second half, forcing the clash into extra-time.
Huddersfield had a chance win the 116th minutes but Wells' first touch let him down and his effort sailed wide of the upright.
It was Huddersfield who held their nerve to win the shoot-out and secure promotion to the top flight.
