Drogba called time on a glittering career filled with highlights after 20 years of professional football this week. The 40-year-old, who played his final game on 8 November for Phoenix Rising, used social media to announce his retirement from the beautiful game.
To date, Drogba is the only African to score more than 100 Premier League goals. Overall, he netted 104 times in 254 appearances for Chelsea, making him the record African scorer in EPL history.
He is followed by Emmanuel Adebayor, who fell just three goals short of the 100-goal mark, having scored 97 times in 242 appearances for Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester City and Crystal Palace.
Retired Nigeria striker Yakubu Aiyegbeni completes the podium with 95 Premier League goals in 252 run-outs for Everton, Middlesbrough, Portsmouth and Blackburn Rovers.
Sadio Mane is currently the highest-scoring African still plying his trade in England. He recently became only the seventh African to reach 50 Premier League goals, while his teammate Mohamed Salah has netted 40 times so far.
Bafana Bafana's record goalscorer McCarthy appears just outside the 12 leading African goalscorers in EPL history, having netted 37 times in 120 appearances for Blackburn Rovers and West Ham United.
