Reports suggest that United snapped up the 25-year-old midfielder for £53.1 million (R911 million), a fee that makes him their fifth most expensive signing of all time.

French midfielder Paul Pogba's £94.5 million (R1.62 billion) price tag in 2016 still makes him the club's most costly signing ever, ahead of Belgium striker Romelu Lukaku, who joined the Red Devils in 2017 for a fee of £76.23 million (R1.3 billion).

The third most expensive United player ever is former Real Madrid star Angel Di Maria, who cost £67.5 million (R1.15 billion) in 2014. French attacker Anthony Martial follows the Argentine with his price tag of £54 million (R924 million).

The aforementioned Fred is in fifth place, ahead of Rio Ferdinand, who joined the Old Trafford club for a reported fee of £41.4 million (R710 million) from Leeds United in 2002.

Juan Mata cost United £40.26 million (R690.86 million) in 2013, while midfielder Nemanja Matic cost the club £40.23 million (R690.34 million) last year.

Ninth on the list is Juan Sebastian Veron, who the club spent £38.34 million (R657 million) on in 2001, followed by Armenian playmaker Henrikh Mkhitaryan.
