The Merseysiders' previous Premier League loss had come on 3 January 2019, when they were beaten 2-1 by eventual 2018/19 EPL champions Manchester City.
The Reds' defeat to Watford last Saturday ensured that Liverpool fell just five games short of Arsenal's English top-flight record, with the current league leaders becoming the third Premier League team to go more than a year unbeaten – Arsenal's Invincibles in 2003/04, and Chelsea, who did not lose between October 2004 and November 2005, being the others.
However, after the defeat to the Hornets, Reds boss Jurgen Klopp insisted he was not disappointed that his side's unbeaten run had come to an end.
"Not really, because I don't think you can break records because you want to break records," he said, as per the club's official website.
"You break records because you are 100% focused on each step you have to do, whatever record it is – a marathon or whatever – and, for that, you have to perform.
"The boys performed and that's why we won the games, but tonight we were not good enough and that's not now a plus for me that I think in history, when they look back in 500 years and will say 'Liverpool nearly did it'.
"That's not my main concern, you cannot change that and it was always clear, sometimes we would lose a game."
So where does Liverpool's streak rank among the best in Europe's top five leagues?
In fifth position, to be exact. Only four teams went longer unbeaten than the Reds, with AC Milan holding the all-time record after going an unbelievable 58 games undefeated between 1991 and 1993, as the BBC pointed out.
German giants Bayern Munich came close in 2014, when they went 53 matches unbeaten, while Arsenal's record run is the third-longest among Europe's top five leagues.
Serie A champions Juventus, who went without defeat for 49 games between 2011 and 2012, are the only other team whose record run lasted longer than Liverpool's.
