Following the club's ban from European club competitions for two seasons, it is believed that the Citizens could be forced to sell a few players in order to balance their books.
Discussing the Manchester club's situation, ESPN journalist Gabriele Marcotti wrote that "if you're making 25% less money, you will need to cut costs accordingly. And that might mean sacrificing some players. Then there's the evident fact that some players may wish to move because they don't want to go two years without Champions League football."
City will appeal the ban, and manager Pep Guardiola has insisted he will stick with the club even if they get relegated from the Premier League, but if the English champions are forced to sell a few players because of less income due to the ban, perhaps the first to go will be some of the club's biggest earners.
Belgian midfielder Kevin De Bruyne, 28, is believed to be the best-paid player at City on £350 000 (R6.8 million) a week, and has been spoken of as a potential target for some of the biggest clubs across Europe.
The playmaker might be tempted to move on in order to keep playing Champions League football, but Raheem Sterling's case is different. The 25-year-old is reportedly on £300 000 a week (R5.8 million), but is said to be committed to staying with the club irrespective of the outcome of its appeal.
Striker Sergio Aguero comes in at third among the best-paid players at the Etihad, followed by veteran Spanish attacking midfielder David Silva, who is expected to move on from the Citizens at the end of the season upon the expiration of his contract, and Brazil stalwart Fernandinho.
Like Silva, Fernandinho might also be on his way out at the end of the campaign, but the club could struggle to hold on to some of their other best-paid players – click through the gallery above to see the 10 highest earners at City!
