Rio Ferdinand: This Is Why Jose Mourinho Isn't Playing This Star

Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has revealed why he thinks manager Jose Mourinho is not giving a particular Red Devils player much game time at the moment.

Mourinho: We Don't Miss Pogba

England international Luke Shaw, who has had an injury-stricken three years at Old Trafford, has only made one appearance for the first team this season, in the League Cup against Burton Albion.

While reasons for the left back's continued lack of game time remain unknown, the former centre back believes Mourinho is testing the 22-year-old.

"It looks like (Mourinho) is testing him mentally," Ferdinand told BT Sport.

"Hit them with something, are you going to stay down or are you going to get up and fight? If you get up, then he says 'Yes, that's the type of man I want in my team' and as players, that's what you want on your team.

"You don't want players who will get one hit and shy away from things. One bad pass in a game, shy away from taking the ball again for the next 10/15 minutes.

"That's not how you win titles. You need players who are going to be brave receiving the ball, not just physically and tackling, but mentally, and saying 'Whatever happens here going forward, I will be with you guys, shoulder to shoulder'."

Ozil Nearing Shock Move To EPL Rivals?

Shaw has made 48 appearances for the Red Devils since his move from Southampton in 2014, and has gone on to assist three goals.

Sometimes playing for smaller teams on a constant basis is better than constant pressure on bigger teams and not playing every time.
