Brazil international and Everton forward Richarlison, who has been critical of Liverpool superstar Virgil van Dijk in the past, has now revealed why he picked a fight with the Brazilian during a Merseyside derby in 2018.
Ahead of the last meeting between Liverpool and Everton, the Selecao striker publicly declared that he believes there are better defenders in world football than Van Dijk.
These comments came two years after he squared up to the Dutchman in a local derby, an incident he has now claimed he started in order to waste time in the fixture.
"Of course, I was never going to back down," Richarlison told Globo Esporte.
"There was a disagreement during the game, which ended up in the typical heated way.
"I was also having the fight to waste time, and the Liverpool players did not like it. Trent Alexander-Arnold and Joe Gomez tried to get involved.
"But it was nothing out of the ordinary. In the whole fight we wasted five minutes, which was good for the team.
"I said (to Van Dijk) in Portuguese: 'Who do you think you are?'
"They were defending their colours and we were defending ours, it was a typical derby."
In that game, Liverpool scored a bizarre last-minute winner after a mishit from Van Dijk from outside the box, which Divock Origi guided into the back of the net after goalkeeper Jordan Pickford misjudged the flight of the ball.
