Revealed: What Jose Mourinho Told Gareth Bale
Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho and Real Madrid's record signing Gareth Bale met ahead of their clubs' clash at the International Champions Cup, and the Portuguese's cheeky message to the Welshman has now been revealed.
Mourinho and Bale met in the tunnel before the game, shook hands and the 54-year-old tactician was then caught on camera revealing his admiration for the Los Blancos star.
"I couldn't buy you because you didn't speak out," Mourinho said, as claimed by Spanish TV station La Sexta and reported by Marca.
The exchange and Mourinho's cheeky comments come about after the United boss had stated there was no chance of United signing Bale in this window.
"I think it was clear that Bale likes Madrid, likes the challenge, likes the situation. He's in a club in a very good situation now," he said earlier this week, as quoted by The Independent.
"I never felt a desire from him to leave, so why lose time and energy on that? No."
Bale struggled with injuries last season, scoring only nine goals in 27 appearances for Los Blancos, but is keen to make up for lost time and impress at the Santiago Bernabeu this term.
Mourinho, meanwhile, is still on the hunt for another winger, with reports suggesting Ivan Perisic is his top priority. However, Inter Milan are playing hardball over the transfer fee and negotiations have apparently stalled as a result.
