Manchester City were close to signing Riyad Mahrez in the January transfer window, but it has now been revealed that they also had a €50 million offer rejected for a Brazil star.
Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Fred has attracted interest from a number of clubs following his performances over the past two seasons.
The 25-year-old, who has been called up to Brazil squad for the 2018 World Cup, was the subject of interest from Man City a few months ago.
However, Shakhtar president Rinat Akhmetov has now revealed they had rejected City's big bid for the midfielder.
“You know that we had negotiations with Manchester City this winter, and there was an official offer – a very big figure,” Akhmetov told the club's official website.
“They offered us around €50m for Fred. And we had enough strength to reject it, because we were playing in the Champions League, we were finishing the Ukrainian League campaign.
“We won the championship and the Cup – in principle, our decision was correct. And I am convinced that we will receive and are receiving no less interesting proposals than that from Manchester City.”
Fred has since been linked with a move to City's cross-town rivals Manchester United, who have reportedly agreed a deal fior the midfielder.
